Open a chat in WhatsApp and the app may now point at the last picture or video you took. The prompt is reaching a limited number of Android and iOS users, and once it arrives it is on by default.
Which layout you see depends on your account. Some people get a pop-up over the message bar with a thumbnail and a question about sending it, with a close button. Others see the camera icon replaced by the thumbnail for a time. Ignoring it costs nothing either way.
Tapping the suggestion does not send anything. It opens WhatsApp’s drawing editor, where you can look at the picture, add a caption or a sticker, or back out. That step is what stops a stray tap from sharing the wrong thing.
WhatsApp does not pick by type or by where the file came from. Whatever landed in the gallery last is what it offers, so that can be a screenshot, a picture saved from a website or a video downloaded from another app, not only something you shot with the camera. That includes private screenshots, which can be offered in the next chat you open.

To turn it off, open Settings, go to Chats and switch off “Recent media suggestions”. According to WABetaInfo, which spotted the rollout, WhatsApp will then never show the suggestion again.
It builds on a feature the same tracker described earlier, when WhatsApp began showing sticker suggestions above the keyboard based on the emojis you type. That one is optional too. WhatsApp has not announced the media suggestions itself or said when everyone will have them, so if you see no pop-up yet, the rollout is staged over the coming weeks.
