God of War Laufey will no longer arrive in February. Santa Monica Studio has moved the PS5 exclusive from 16 February to 20 May 2027, a delay of three months.
The game stars Faye, Kratos’s wife, whose death just before the first 2018 God of War set that story going. In Laufey she wakes in the afterlife and sets out on a journey of her own, one that unfolds in parallel with the stories of Kratos and his son Atreus in the two earlier games.
The studio announced the new date in a post on X, thanking fans for the response since the June reveal. “We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential,” it wrote. It gave no other reason and did not say whether any feature or scene changed.
The new date also gets the game away from a crowded start to the year. Engadget points out that Sony’s own horror sequel is out on 28 January, and that the company usually releases its annual baseball title MLB The Show in March, so the early months of 2027 were getting busy for PlayStation owners with limited time and money to spend. A May date means Sony still has a first-party release in the spring quarter.
Laufey is the first God of War game that does not put Kratos in the lead. Eurogamer’s report says Faye moves through an afterlife that holds gods from several mythologies, the series’ faster, original-style combat returns, and Kratos still appears in the game. The studio has also said its next Kratos game will connect to what happens in Laufey.
February 2027 is already full, with the Fable reboot, Persona 4 Revival and Metro 2039 all due that month, so the delay also leaves those games more room.
Laufey is a PS5 game only; nothing in the announcement mentions a PC version. The studio says it will be back with more updates soon, without giving a date for them.
