Grand Theft Auto 6 has already taken an estimated $751 million in preorders on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. The figure covers sales up to 3 November, 16 days before the game goes on sale.
Sensor Tower counts 7.71 million units so far. PlayStation accounts for roughly three of every four dollars, which leaves Xbox with the rest.
Sensor Tower’s GTA VI sales tracker splits the total by console: about $559 million on PlayStation and $192 million on Xbox, a 74% to 26% split. These are estimates from the analytics firm, not numbers released by Rockstar or its parent company Take-Two Interactive.
The price per copy explains why the total is so high. The Standard Edition costs $80 and the Ultimate Edition $100, and $751 million across 7.71 million units works out to roughly $97 a copy, so most buyers appear to be taking the dearer edition. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said much the same in August, reading the early orders as a sign that the most dedicated fans are the ones buying first.
Zelnick has defended the pricing before. In an interview with IGN he called the game a “bargain”, arguing that the real cost of a big-budget game has fallen over 20 years because prices have not kept pace with inflation. “We aim always to deliver vastly more value than what we charge,” he said, adding that even the premium edition is priced to give buyers much more than they pay for.
Zelnick’s August explanation was that the high-priced edition’s popularity is “a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are preordering now” and, by his reading, the first buyers are the keenest ones.
The benchmark everyone will reach for is GTA 5. GTA 5 took $800 million on its first day and reached $1 billion within three days, the quickest any entertainment product had got there. Preorder money is counted separately from launch-week sales, so the $751 million does not directly compare with those figures, but it shows how much of the launch is already banked.
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Sensor Tower updates its tracker weekly, so the next figure should show how many more people ordered in the final stretch before launch.
