Anthropic reportedly presses on with IPO at a lower valuation

Anthropic is said to be aiming for a listing before US Thanksgiving, raising $80 billion to $100 billion despite this week's tech selloff.

Key points

  • Anthropic reportedly wants to list before US Thanksgiving on 26 November.
  • Target raise is $80-100 billion at a $1.25-1.75 trillion valuation.
  • Annualised revenue is reportedly about $81 billion, up from about $65 billion in July.

A bad week for tech stocks has not stopped Anthropic from lining up its stock market debut. Investors quoted in a report say the maker of Claude still wants to list before US Thanksgiving on 26 November, and will accept a smaller price than it had hoped for.

Backers had talked of a $2 trillion valuation. The range now being discussed is $1.25 trillion to $1.75 trillion, which would still be a jump from the $965 billion the company is worth today. The sale would bring in somewhere between $80 billion and $100 billion. Anthropic has not confirmed any of this publicly.

Growth is the argument for the high end. Revenue, measured as an annual run rate, is said to have climbed from about $65 billion in late July to around $81 billion now, an increase of roughly a quarter in three months.

Markets are the problem. Higher borrowing costs and enormous AI spending plans sent shares lower this week, and the US midterm result reportedly deepened the slide, since the winning Democrats had promised to slow the building of data centres. The Nasdaq 100 lost 6.4% on Thursday before regaining some ground on Friday.

OpenAI is dealing with the same chill. It has shaved $150 billion off the valuation it is seeking in its latest round, and the cash raised so far is roughly one third of the $30 billion goal.

For people who use Claude, nothing changes because of the filing news itself. No listing date has been announced, and the company has not said which exchange it would use.
