Hands on: Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth Stereo Headset

A few days ago I was given a Bluetooth stereo headset to review. It was “Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset – BH-905i”. WOMWorld/Nokia sent it to us at Tech Prolonged. Very first impression I had, when opened the box, was as it was a thing that I had missed to review until now. Believe me or not, everyone here at office was just praising it’s built quality. The sound quality was yet to check that time. All those praises were about its premium quality build. Nokia really did an awesome job manufacturing such an accessory for mobiles. (Well not for mobiles only, it worked pretty well with Bluetooth enabled Windows 7 Laptop in a test with a few functions missing. It should work with most of the Bluetooth multimedia devices).

BH-905i seems to be a carefully re-designed version the original BH-905 which was not that much appreciated regarding the design.

The Headband

Foamed headband resides comfortably on the head with a Nokia branding on the top side of the band. Additionally it’s expandable to be adjusted properly with the size of your head.

Ear Pads

Ear pads are also fully foamed to comfort your ears. Supra-aural styled ear pads just sit on and grip your ears but the softly foamed structure does comfort the ears with no weight left on them. Of course it doesn’t mean that you should live with them on your ears for the whole day.

Both ear pads are adjustable from two angles, horizontally and vertically. They can rotate and tilt to fit most of the ears out there in the world ;)

Controls and Connectors

On the right ear pad there is nicely designed controller, and big enough to help your input without looking at what you are doing. The keys are identifiable very easily. Forward and rewind keys on the sides. Play/Pause key at bottom and Call Handling/Multifunction key on top.

Underneath on the side panel the right ear pad houses a volume control keys, connector for audio cable (provided with sales package), and a Bluetooth indicator light. Not only via Bluetooth, the headset works with a wired connection to the music player or your mobile phone. Different types of cables and adapters are provided with the sales package.

Play/Pause, Forward and rewind keys are really not supposed to be explained but multifunction key performs the same way as it performs with a standard Bluetooth headset/hands free for turning on the Bluetooth, pairing with Bluetooth devices and accept/reject calls. Plus in BH-905i the Bass booster and Stereo widening are handled with multi-function key.

Left ear pad is providing the active noise cancellation key, a charger connector, an indicator light for charger and active noise cancellation if activated. Active noise cancellation key is just a standard on/off switch to activate/deactivate the noise cancellation. And the charger connector serves for charging with standard Nokia charger provided with the sales package.

Active Noise Cancellation

Sound quality was really superb with the features like bass boost and stereo widening. But on the top of that what I liked the most of it was the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) feature to reduce background noise. You can listen to music and calls clearly with noise cancellation activated. Multi-microphones are used for ANC.

Power key for Active Noise Cancellation resides on the left ear pad. Right below in the Power key there is a light indicator and a Charger Connector. The indicator light for charging and active noise cancellation is displayed green.

On the left ear pad there is not more than the above features.

Bass booster and Stereo widening

Mutlifunction key on the right ear pad also performs the functions to control bass booster and stereo widening

  • To activate the bass booster effect, press the multifunction key. (Theheadset beeps once.)
  • To activate the stereo widening effect, after one second, press the multifunction key a second time. (The headset beeps twice.)
  • To activate the bass booster and stereo widening effect, press the multifunction key a third time. (The headset beeps three times.)
  • To deactivate the effects, press the multifunction key a fourth time. (The headset plays a long beep.)

The headset saves the selected setting for future use.

Adapters & Cables

Along with the headset there is wide range of adapters and cables in the sales package to support most of the devices out there.

Sales package contents may include following in addition to the headset itself and carrying case.

  • Nokia Audio Cable CA-143U with 3.5mm Nokia AV connector (~1.2m)
  • Nokia Audio Cable CA-182U with 3.5mm iPhone compatible connector (~1.2m)

Nokia BH-905i with Nokia N8 and Nokia E6

We have tested Nokia N8 and E6 with Nokia BH-905i via Bluetooth and via wired connection. Following are a few pictures of Nokia BH-905i wired through Nokia N8 and Bluetooth connectivity with Nokia E6.
