Hasselblad MotoMod, the Modular Accessory coming to Moto Z?

Lenovo has announced its latest Moto flagships during its Tech World 2016, Moto Z and Moto Z Force which come with modular accessories like LG’s G5.

These MotoMod accessories are designed exclusively for Moto Z smartphone which magnetically snaps on the back of the smartphone and transform it into something like a speaker, a projector, a battery pack, or as recently reported – an extended camera.

Lenovo has already released a video containing a few MotoMods including JBL speakers and the Moto Insta-share Projector, a battery pack. During the announcement, Seang Chau, SVP of Software Engineering at Motorola teased with a modular camera accessory to come in future. “We’re also taking the smartphone camera experience to a whole new level… More to come on that” – hinted Chau.

While the company has its plans for the future release, Evan Blass has already shared the MotoMod camera attachment for Moto Z a few weeks ago. Following product render shows, in addition to mini projector and speaker, a camera override cover that is reported to be built by the Hasselblad as well as has its own photography features.

If all goes according to speculations and if it’s a Hasselblad camera attachment as rumored, it is being expected that the accessory module may override the Moto Z’s camera and use the camera sensor inside the attachment accessory – well, that’s kind of an innovation in a smartphone, if it’s for real. That also comes with a wider lens and 10x optical zoom and apparently there’s a dedicated camera shutter button and a Xenon flash too.

If we rewind back we have seen LG G5, which actually introduced modular design snap-on accessories this year, comes with a camera grip that also features a dedicated shutter button. On the other hand, professional camera makers Leica’s involvement in Huawei P9’s dual-camera. The MotoMod, if true, will have both of the factors and even more features. So do not expect it to be something for an affordable price – after all it will be a Hasselblad product.

We’re watching it with the keen eyes to know whether this MotoMod will truly be a Hasselblad. We’ll update you as well.
