Sony Xperia XZ scores 87 for its Camera, Ranks 3 – DxO Report

DxOMark seems to be fully dedicated these holidays testing smartphone cameras all the way down. Following the recent tests they did with LG V20 and Mate 9 cameras where both the smartphones stand jointly at 85 points occupying the 5th slot, there comes a report about Sony Xperia XZ delivering better results than the both above.

Xperia XZ features proprietary Exmor RS image sensor in the rear camera module that is 23 megapixel 1/2.3″ format along with Sony’s own 24mm equivalent f/2.0 G-lens. The camera has predictive hybrid autofocus resulting fast captures. The camera works with company’s BIONZ image-processing engine and records 4K video recording. But still it lacks optical image stabilization unlike many other top end phones feature this thing for better stabilizing video and better low-light still shots.

Scoring 87 in DxOMark labs, the Xperia XZ impressed the lab engineers with its autofocus system – referred as “predictive hybrid autofocus”. The testers found it fast and accurate in all lighting situations. The camera’s exposure handling was also good along with nice color rendering as well as the white balance handling was also consistent.

What restricted this Xperia smartphone to even hit the top slots, was the lack of dynamic range that wasn’t good enough to impress the lab. In addition the camera algorithms might be trying to hard and ended up with over-sharpening the still photos with artifacts, haloing and ringing.

Video performance of the Xperia camera actually got more points  as it did well with video stabilizing and exposure handling. The video footage also lack the dynamic range and produced clipping. The phone camera ranks jointly at 3rd place with the family member Xperia Z5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The slot is also shared with Moto Z Force.
