All Nokia devices of 2017 will update to Android P – hinted HMD Country Manager Philippines

Having bought the Nokia brand license for ten-years, HMD launched three Nokia smartphones running Android Nougat earlier this year and the fourth flagship Nokia 8 more recently. These Nokia phones did well across markets as well as HMD kept its promise to update the devices monthly with security patches.

In fact the lowest cost – Nokia 3 also received its first real update from 7.0 to 7.1.1 a couple of weeks ago. Further more, all of these devices are promised to get Android Oreo by the end of 2017.

Well, the interesting thing is that HMD Global has once again hinted that all these phones will receive Android P software update, whatever P stands for. Shannon Mead, HMD Global Country Manager, disclosed during the Nokia 8 launch in Philippines.

Starting with the introduction of the new Nokia 8, Mead told about the process of software updates their devices have been receiving. Like HMD always use to tell, he referred to the same “pure” nature of Android software and its security updates. He told that all of their devices were launched with the current iteration of Nougat, “all will upgrade to Oreo,” — pause — “all will upgrade to ‘P’, I don’t know what ‘P’ stands for yet.”

We aren’t sure what that actually meant by Mead – whether it was used just as an example to tell that their Nokia phones will continuously receive software updates? or he actually meant that the phones we have seen right now will eventually receive the far-from-announcement Android P software update?

Though HMD has promised to give two year software support update for their devices, we are still looking at an interesting statement by an HMD Global official about something which is under control of Google and the search giant hasn’t even announced anything about the next Android P. We don’t even know what plans Google has for the next software update — right now, when they already have yet to announce their flagship Pixel 2 smartphone with Android Oreo.

So you are advised to take this sip with only a quick pleasure and forget about it until we hear about more close facts. We haven’t even tried these mid-ranger devices on the latest Android Oreo, to tell how these will perform. Nokia 8 however could be the one to get yet-unannounced Android P later next year, but we don’t bet on the mid-rangers Nokia 6, 5 or Nokia 3. If these three devices are promised by HMD to receive software updates of Android P, that would be more than awesome for their loyal customers.

On another note, we can assume the fact of “pure” Android on HMD Global’s Nokia smartphones as they will have to go through far less process of building their own flavor or the skin on top, unlike many other phone makers do. So you can expect faster major updates on Nokia devices than those phone makers, including the next Android P – on whatever device it may release to.
