Gentle Monster says its Android XR glasses arrive in December

Gentle Monster says its first Intelligent Eyewear collection for Android XR arrives in December, with a Joaquin Phoenix short film in mid-November.

Key points

  • Gentle Monster says its first Android XR glasses launch in December.
  • A Joaquin Phoenix short film follows in mid-November, plus a New York preview event.
  • No price or exact release date has been given.

Gentle Monster has named a month for the smart glasses it is building on Google’s Android XR platform: December. The Korean eyewear brand, one of Google’s design partners for the platform, gave no day and no price.

The announcement came from the brand’s own account on X, which also revealed how the glasses will be introduced. A short film directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Joaquin Phoenix is due in mid-November, and the post invites people to register for a preview event in New York through the brand’s website.

The brand is selling the glasses under the name “Intelligent Eyewear”, the label Google and Samsung use for the category. Gentle Monster’s post does not say what the glasses can do, which Samsung or Google hardware they pair with, or how many styles there will be.

It is the second Android XR partner to give a timeline this week. Warby Parker’s first pair opens for pre-order on 12 November, though that brand has not said when it ships. Samsung’s own pair was reported at the end of October to arrive in mid-December, and Samsung has not confirmed that date.

So far the three brands are on different clocks: Warby Parker is taking orders first, Gentle Monster has a month, and Samsung has only a report behind it. Nothing in Gentle Monster’s post says whether its glasses will have a display or audio only.

Neither brand has announced a price, and Google has not said where the glasses will be sold. Pre-orders on 12 November and the mid-November film are the next dates to watch before the December release.
