Coolpad’s wide-screen phone is now on sale. The Cool X Wide went on sale in China on 8 November, about three weeks after Coolpad announced it, and Coolpad pitches it as the first Android phone built in this wide shape, which Huawei’s Pura X View introduced.
The screen is a 6.38-inch TFT LCD with a 16:10 ratio, a 90Hz refresh rate and a 720 x 1158 resolution, so the body is about 94.5mm wide, wider than the 70 to 80mm of a typical phone. The body is short for its width, which is the whole idea of the format. Coolpad’s pricing is the other half of the pitch, with the entry version at CNY 999.
| Version | Price in China |
|---|---|
| 8GB + 128GB | CNY 999 |
| 8GB + 256GB | CNY 1,199 |
| 12GB + 256GB | CNY 1,399 |
The low price shows in the hardware. A MediaTek Helio G99, a 4G-only chip, runs the phone, with LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage, and a microSD slot takes cards up to 256GB. The rear camera is a 50-megapixel main sensor under a large camera visor. A 4,600mAh battery charges at 18W.
It comes in Glazed White, Rock Black and Crimson, and the body is 150.3mm tall by 94.5mm wide, 8.95mm thick. Because the chip is 4G-only, there is no 5G on any of the three versions, and the 720-line screen shows where Coolpad saved money.
Coolpad has only listed it for China, with no word on other markets. Xiaomi is also reportedly testing a wide-screen phone of its own, though that phone has not been announced.
