Google has added in-chat file editing to the Gemini app. Ask Gemini for a document, a spreadsheet, a slide deck or a block of code, and the file now opens as a preview you can change by hand, without exporting it first.
The new view lets you expand the file to full screen and type straight into it, and you can still ask Gemini to rework the parts you don’t like.
What you can open and change
Google’s announcement lists Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown, plain text and code. You can highlight a passage and ask a question about it, or ask Gemini to refine the file.
Google’s own example is a student who uploads handwritten lecture notes. Gemini turns them into a PDF study guide, the student corrects a line by hand, highlights a weak section for Gemini to redo, and asks follow-up questions about it.
How the editing works
Expanding a file shows it full screen with the text open for typing. From there you have two routes: change the words yourself, or select a section and hand it back to Gemini with an instruction. Google describes the chat as the place to ask follow-up questions about the file, so one conversation can carry a draft from first version to final copy.
The same applies to visuals in a file. In Google’s lecture-notes example, the student can have Gemini revise either the text or the visuals in a highlighted section, then keep asking questions about the finished guide.
Web first, PDFs on phones
| Format | Web | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Preview and edit | Preview and edit | |
| Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT, code | Preview and edit | Web only for now |
Google says the feature is rolling out to all users in every language where the Gemini app is available, and its post names no paid plan requirement.
Gemini in Pakistan
Pakistan is on the country list in Google’s help page for the Gemini web app, so the web version of the editor should be open to readers here as the rollout reaches them. Google’s post gives no date for when it reaches each account, and it doesn’t say whether any limits differ by country.
Anyone who mainly works on a phone can edit PDFs today, but Google hasn’t said when editing for formats other than PDF will come to the phone apps.
